About the Artist - Otto Sims

Otto Jungarrayi Sims was born in 1960 in Yuendumu, an Aboriginal community situated approximately 290km northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. His childhood was characterized by extensive travels throughout the surrounding countryside of this region. Completing his high school education in Yuendumu, Otto pursued further studies at an Indigenous college in Alice Springs, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Business.

During the 1990s, Otto held positions at both the Yuendumu Council and the Tanami Goldmine. Inspired by his father, Paddy Japaljarri Sims, Otto began painting narratives passed down through generations, deeply rooted in his family's ancestral lands of Kunajarrayi and Yanjilpirri. These stories intricately connect Otto to the land, its features, and its rich biodiversity.

Since 1990, Otto has been a dedicated artist at Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Indigenous-owned and operated art center based in Yuendumu. In 2002, he was elected to the executive committee, assuming the role of Chairman in 2007. Notably, Otto embarked on his inaugural overseas journey in March 2008 to Bahrain, attending the opening of a Warlukurlangu group exhibition at the La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art.

Outside of his artistic endeavors, Otto's passion for hunting Kiparra (Bush turkey) is evident, often spotted traversing the backroads around Yuendumu in his four-wheel drive.
