Kyrgies - More Than Just Another Wool Slide

Kyrgies - More Than Just Another Wool Slide

Posted by Tracey Porst on

If you’re new to Kyrgies, they’re beautiful, handmade wool slides from Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgies have partnered with a women-owned factory in Bishkek that pays fair wages and employs mostly women, supporting economic opportunity and social progress.

Also, their environmental approach is just as intentional. Kyrgies use locally sourced wool, vegetable-tanned leather, and minimal, recycled packaging to reduce their footprint at every step. When you order your slides from The Fair Trader, you'll note that we dont over package them either for this reason.

An Honest Review

I have a pair myself and have road tested them before choosing to offer them on The Fair Trader website, and confirm they are excellent. Also, I have a great working relationship with the team and confirm they are a delight to work with in bring this brand to you.

My Oatmeal Barefoot Slides are super comfy, have kept their shape and I have even manged to wear them briefly taking my dog Ted out for his evening ablutions. So they have been thoroughly road tested and are highly rated here at Chez Porst. My husband will be received his for Father’s Day this year. Tracey, July 2026

Why Kyrgies

I’ve seen a few winter slides around lately, but they dont match Kyrgies for the heritage and mastery of Kyrgyzstan’s finest artisans. The artisans at Kyrgies are employed under fair trade conditions as mentioned, which means every purchase supports fair wages, safe working environments, and the perpetuation of centuries-old skills.

Each pair showcases skilled craftsmanship and fair trade practices, supporting fair wages and traditional artistry.

Cleaning Guidance

Kyrgies house shoes are handmade from all-natural materials in a women-owned, fair-wage workshop in Kyrgyzstan, using ethically sourced Kyrgyz wool and age-old felting traditions from the Asian Steppe.

As Kyrgies are made from felted wool, they can easily shrink or lose their shape in the washing machine. If your Kyrgies are looking a little dirty, try spot cleaning with a dry brush, or if necessary, a gentle wool-friendly detergent and a damp cloth.

Natural Materials

Our vegetable-tanned leather is treated using natural plant extracts instead of the harsh chemicals found in conventional tanning. This eco-friendly process reduces pollution and minimizes environmental impact while preserving the leather's natural durability.

7 Reasons Why We Love Kyrgies

  1. Flexible - they move with your foot.
  2. Supportive - the felted wool holds well.
  3. Wear Inside and Outside - recommended for some styles.
  4. Breathable - natural materials are best for this.
  5. Temperature Regulating - can wear them for long periods.
  6. Easy On and Off - great for anyone in need of an easy to wear option. Home, hospitals, travelling.
  7. Eco-Friendly - and handmade. What's not to love?
