About the Artwork

In this Dreaming story, a Jampijinpa and a Napangardi, who were dog ancestors, embarked on a journey from the western to the eastern regions. Upon reaching Tapu, a significant rockhole, the two dogs parted ways. Napangardi, the female dog, ventured southward, while Jampijinpa, the male counterpart, headed north. However, Jampijinpa soon found himself overcome with loneliness and emitted mournful howls, calling out for Napangardi in the south.

Responding swiftly to his cries, Napangardi rushed to reunite with Jampijinpa, and they solemnized their union at Ngarnka. Adorned with traditional men’s and women’s marriage headdresses, Jampijinpa adorned himself with white clay for the ceremonial rites.

Continuing their journey eastward, the pair eventually arrived at Warlaku (Ali Curung). Here, they discovered a thriving community of dogs, comprised of numerous families - mothers, fathers, children, and uncles all cohabiting harmoniously. Jampijinpa and Napangardi constructed a burrow for shelter and began to expand their own family within this vibrant community. Electing to remain in Warlaku, they integrated themselves among the other dogs.

Thus, the 'malikijarra Jukurrpa' (two dogs Dreaming) serves as a poignant narrative illustrating the importance of familial bonds and marital fidelity within Indigenous traditions.
