About the Artwork

This artwork portrays the tale of Yilpi's grandfather and the tragic hailstorm that claimed his life. As a headstrong young man, he disregarded the warnings of the elders regarding an impending tempest. Ignoring their counsel, he ventured out to hunt and even intended to perform a ceremonial dance to avert the looming storm, taking the ceremonial dancing sticks with him. Regrettably, he never returned.

In fear, the remainder of the clan sought refuge in caves to weather the storm's fury. Following its passing, the women embarked on a desperate search for the missing man but to no avail. Meanwhile, in a distant part of the land, children were innocently gathering bush foods and swimming in newly formed rockholes. It was here, by chance, that they stumbled upon the lifeless body of the young man, a victim of the relentless storm.

This poignant narrative is shared with the children as a cautionary lesson, emphasising the importance of heeding the wisdom of their elders.

Better World Arts

Better World Arts facilitates cross cultural art projects between Australian artists and artisans in India. The Aboriginal artists are paid royalties for their designs, and the artisans in India work in conditions that encompass the 10 Principles of Fair Trade, including receiving a fair wage, working in safe conditions, and ensuring there is no child labour or forced labour.

If your item doesn't fit in one of our parcel bags, we try and reuse boxes that have been sent to us.

Brisbane Orders - if you would like your item delivered, please let us know. We may able to do this from our base at South Brisbane.

We will happily gift wrap products for an extra $1. This can be added at checkout along with a short note to the person receiving the gift.

When purchasing multiple products don't forget to include in your order notes if you would like the products to be wrapped separately or all together. Around Christmas time, please specify if it is a Christmas gift or not so we can choose the wrapping paper accordingly.
