"Sometimes the smallest pebble can cause the mightiest ripple"
There are just so many daily demands on women as they maintain a house with so few conveniences, and rarely spending money of their own.
When we were in Bangladesh we were driven in ancient jeeps along the sand and brick roads. The potholes were many, and the journey was one of trying to keep my bottom on the slippery bench seat in the back, and trying not to hit my head on the roof, or land on the jeep floor. After one especially nasty pothole John spat out a bloody tooth, shrugged and with a wry smile said "Welcome to Bangladesh".
In Bangladesh there is an amazing group of women who make crochet toys that are sold all over the world.
Pebble toys was established by Samantha Morshed. Pebble toys and baby products are made by the women at Hathay Bunano, a non-profit Fair Trade organisation in Bangladesh. Hathay Bunano is Bangla for 'handmade' or 'hand knitted', which is exactly how all Pebble products are made. The aim of Hathay Buano is to give women from rural areas access to fair, safe and flexible work that is close to home. The women knit beautiful toys, chatting and sharing stories as they work, while earning money for their families' livelihoods and children's education.
The toys are absolutely beautiful crochet cotton, and not only very cute but machine washable as well. We have some in store and they are small and cuddly, just right for little hands.
